Campward

Academic Work (Fall, 2024) • Option Studio

University of Toronto • Advisor: Eiri Ota

During my time on Ward’s Island, I sensed a gentle informality—an ease shaped by its past as a tent community. Handmade touches, crafted from branches and stones, spoke of a life attuned to nature’s rhythms. I was moved to design a base camp for children, where camping becomes a medium for rediscovery: knot-tying, hammock-hanging, cooking, and quiet observation. The site invites instinct over intellect—like the tale of the Blind Man and the Elephant, each space reveals only part of a whole. Undulating ceilings, swaying towers, and gentle mounds stir curiosity, fostering connection, humility, and a quiet sense of belonging.
